A Pre-Oscar Charity Event for the Mamas of Haiti

m.a.m.a. e a r t h and The Q Side are getting ready to shine some light on the pregnant women and newborn babies of Haiti. On March 6th, they’ll hold their next red carpet charity event that will bring together music, live performance and ‘a love bazaar’ featuring local artisans. Proceeds will benefit Yayasan Bumi Sehat (Healthy Mother Earth Foundation), a non-profit, village-based organization that brings their field experience after the Tsunami and earthquakes in Indonesia to Haiti.

Bumi Sehat has a team of medics, including midwives, in Haiti to provide prenatal care, labor and birth support, and postpartum care. Their intention is to offer women a place of dignity in which to give birth. This group proved their capacity to provide long-term relief through their response to the Tsunami in Indonesia. They were able to establish a clinic that is run by locals to help over 7,000 people annually and they are in Haiti using the same model to set up a clinic that will attract other NGO’s and local community members to empower the Haitian people.

The show will feature Kimberly Miguel Mullen, a dancer with strong connections to Caribbean and Cuban styles of dance that has taken her all over the world performing and teaching. Bruno Mars, currently featured on B.o.B.’s smash-hit “Nothin On U”, has written songs for the likes of K’Naan, Adam Levine and Matisyahu.  When Bruno’s band hits the stage and you hear his infectious sound, you’ll understand what all the fuss is about.  The “love bazaar” will feature vendors like Fahmina – a sustainable company that makes beautiful and wearable leather art that is both chic and avant-guarde, the Civilian Press, whose bragging rights include an artwork collaboration with Kat Von D for the MUSINK music and tattoo festival, will offer designs with Dia De Los Muertos elements that appeal to the alternative crowd, urban and artisan groups.  The night will feature all this and so much more!

The event takes place on March 6th at Dakota Lounge, one of Santa Monica’s nightspots known for being a live music venue that brings people of all musical tastes and backgrounds together.  Come enjoy the show, get inspired and have some fun, all while helping the most vulnerable victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

    Hi Angel,
Thanks for the message! For now, the blog is only online – no paper newsletter – so yes, printing is the best way to keep this piece.
    All best to you,
    Andrea

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for the email and I’m glad the content resonates with you. The funds we raised that night went towards installing a water system (in Haiti) in the geodesic dome that serves as the clinic where women give birth. We were so pleased we could help in such an important way!
This charity is now known as Mother Health International (http://motherhealthinternational.org/).
    Peace,
    Andrea
