We are so excited to share more about Mina Zulal in Hamburg, Germany. She is truly leading the way in developing our idea of creating Mama Earth chapters around the world. This year, she has already raised nearly $700 (usd) for Mama Earth programs* and she is only 14 years old! She’s raised the money with bake sales, flea markets and making seed packets. Young people like Mina show us that helping others has no age requirement and doesn’t take a lot of money – only the motivation and commitment it takes to follow our hearts and complete a task. Check out Mina’s efforts for Earth Day in her own community in Hamburg, Germany:
“I am our female class representative and founder of our climate work group so I have organized an ‘Earth Day Class Party’. I am one of Plant-for-the -Planet‘s Climate Justice Ambassadors, a worldwide network that spreads our vision of climate justice and global citizenship to our schools, families and friends. Our common symbol is the planting of trees. We show that everybody can take responsibility and create our future actively – by organizing planting parties, giving lectures and motivating others to join in.
At the Earth Day Class Party, I first presented a talk about our dealings with our environment and their ramifications. In the second part, I organized a game that would get my classmates to think more about the current situation relating to our Co2 emissions and what we can do, to be a part of a “re-thinking”. The whole class had to think and work together about how population, emissions and money affect all the continents around the world.
The third part was a trip to a beautiful landscape where every student got to plant their own tree. My idea was to take a picture of every student in front of their own tree and after a few years, they can visit their tree and see how much it’s grown and how much they themselves have changed and grown.”
The team at 4m.erdd.us is SO happy that our projects are inspiring this kind of action. Mina is a shining example for us all and reinforces the Mama Earth message that time spent in nature brings people together across generations, ethnic and economic backgrounds and helps us maintain a sense of wonder and gratitude about the world around us. Planting as a service.
*The money that Mina raised for Mama Earth with her bake sales and seed packets helped to fund a weekend of Earth Day events in Southern California including a documentary film screening of The Greenhorns at Center for Living Peace and allowed us to cover costs of participating at a family festival at Aveson Charter Elementary School. Her donations helped to benefit FOUR non-profit organizations (including us) as well as help spread our message to many people of all ages!
We invite YOU to get involved and tell us a story about the work you’re doing in your own schools and neighborhoods and we’ll share it with our global Mama Earth community!
