Making Jewelry at the Cottage

Jewelry Workshop at Women's Care Cottage in Los Angeles, CA

The 4mamaearth team is continuing our series of girls’ workshops at the Women’s Care Cottage (a program of Volunteers of America that assists young women ages 18-21 coming out of foster care) in North Hollywood with the intention to have fun and share ways to inspire, shift attitudes, create confidence, and cultivate a sense of empowerment and creativity.

Henna artist, Liza Vosbigian, gives the girls small henna tattoos.

Last weekend we brought our dear friend, world-traveler and jewelry designer, Liza Vosbigian to lend her henna art for the girls and our good friend Val who brought all the supplies, beads and know-how to show the young women and Care Cottage staff how to make jewelry.  We made bracelets and necklaces and everyone expressed how relaxing it was to work with their hands.

As we continue our work at the Women’s Care Cottage, the 4mamaearth team is working on a weekly Dramatic Arts Hour (with poetry/spoken word, a sharing circle, art and improvisational theatre) that will seek to enhance and enrich the lives of these young women by providing a safe, supportive, and creative environment that supports overall health and well-being. This Dramatic Arts Hour will promote social, physical, intellectual, and creative development of young women.

Our gratitude goes out to the many 4mamaearth supporters that donated to our recent Rockethub campaign. The money raised is helping us fund these workshops and provide art supplies and healthy snacks and lunches for the young women who are choosing to participate.  We are looking forward to more gatherings with these young women who have faced some substantial challenges and are doing their best to better themselves and their lives.

A big thanks also goes out to VANS, a Southern California-based manufacturer of sneakers, skateboarding shoes and other shoe types catering primarily to the skateboarder/surfer youth market since 1966.  They’ve been supporting m.a.m.a. earth for several years and donated a bunch of super cute women’s clothing that we were able to give to the Women’s Care Cottage. Cindi Dietrich, Director of Development at Volunteers of America writes, “As you know the young ladies we serve are coming out of the foster care system – many with nothing but the clothes on their back. Your contribution will truly help our girls. Having new clothing (that they like!) will be an important factor in regaining self-love and
will support their transition to become self-sufficient young women.”
