ONE PEACE ART EXHIBIT 2014

“The arts, whether as formal therapy, community outreach or enrichment, do impact lives in positive, far-reaching ways. They change the way we experience the world.”  -Cathy Malchiodi, PhD, LPCC, LPAT, ATR-BC

This June, m.a.m.a. earth will present the second installment of the One Peace Charity Art Event at the historic Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, CA.  The exhibit will be curated by m.a.m.a. earth founder, Jaime Kailani Bayot and m.a.m.a. earth Creative Director, Andrea Miller.  The show will feature new offerings from emerging and established artists from Los Angeles, New York and the Philippines. This year’s exhibit explores the universal need to be creative and pays tribute to the ancestors who have come before us. Proceeds from the event will help to fund continuing m.a.m.a. earth art, music and nature programs as well as those of our non-profit partners. Both Saturday night and Sunday’s events will feature live music, an interactive all-ages art project, food trucks and punch bowls. On Sunday, custom live screen-printing by Hit+Run.

During the month of June, we’ll be sharing more about each artist, but here’s a little something about each one:

Bernadette Bayot – Mama Mars, MeMe, Bernie, our angel. She passed away one week before last year’s show and we were humbled and proud to display her paintings. These will be on exhibit again this year.

Ronda Brown – Visual artist and lead art teacher at Crenshaw High School. She is co-creator of m.a.m.a. earth’s ALTER, an after-school arts and writing program in South Los Angeles.

Eric Coleman – Photographer and founder of MOCHILLA, a production company formed with fellow photographer B+ in 1997. Since their start, Mochilla has produced five music videos, four documentaries, several ad campaigns, a remix album and more than forty album covers and continues to grow. Both Coleman and B+ have taken their respective fields to new heights selling films to the Sundance Channel, being distributed by Ninja Tune,  touring Europe several times and executing campaigns for Adidas, Dickies, Alphanumeric and Vans.

Ben Ferrer – A Philippine-born, Los Angeles-based, American artist who specializes in portraiture. Ben has been working as a registered nurse as his main profession for the last 14 years. Ben says, “Many years of bedside nursing has provided me with emotional maturity and a wealth of knowledge in understanding individuals at their most difficult, trying times. Behind every face there is a great story to be told. There is an essence, a soul, a fighting spirit. Thus, I put forward my best effort in capturing these characteristics and making them apparent in the portrait.”

Adia Millett – Originally from Los Angeles, California, Adia received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. In 2001, she moved to New York City for the prestigious Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, followed by the Studio Museum in Harlem residency program. Millett has been a standout in numerous group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York and New Orleans. Millett has taught as an artist in residence at Columbia College in Chicago, UC Santa Cruz, Cooper Union in NY,  and currently at California College of the Arts.

Marley Van Peebles – Marley is the 15 year old son of m.a.m.a. earth founder, Jaime Kailani. He attends Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Downtown Los Angeles and has been creating visual art since he was a small child. He is a wondrous, complex and artistic force who has great potential to develop and succeed in art.

Farah Sosa – Farah is a culture photographer based in California. Her regularly updated photo-blog FARAHSTOP documents the contemporary music scene in Los Angeles, with a focus on global dance music.

Shah Wonders – Shah is a Grammy and MTV award winning, Brooklyn-based graphic artist. Weaving his skills in a range of mediums, his style lends itself to the mashing of traditional illustration, Japanese Anime and “Pop Extravagance”. His latest brainchild, Pinksick & Co. is a Contemporary Art/ Design/ Fashion/ Animation and Film studio that supplies a substantial amount creative girth to an exclusive celebrity clientele.

We’ll also feature an installation of artwork from Short Elementary School and Crenshaw High School.

Through creativity, we can achieve our highest potential as Art allows us to heal ourselves, one another and the world. We have asked this remarkable group of creators to share their creativity with us to help m.a.m.a. earth make a change for the better.
