A Mural Project at Crenshaw High School

Visual artist, Aise Born, works on a 3-paneled mural at Crenshaw High School in South Los Angeles.

Last summer, as part of an after-school arts and writing program at Crenshaw High School, Mama Earth helped coordinate a campus beautification mural to be installed in the entryway of the school by visual artist, Aise Born.

Why A Mural?

  • Murals become landmarks in the community.
  • Murals give the youth a positive means to express their identity and form a sense of ownership, civic pride, and investment in the community.
  • School murals protect school walls from vandalism and save schools countless hours of repainting.

What is Public Art?

  • Public art is the pushing of boundaries by presenting art in public contexts, outside of museums and galleries.
  • Public art reflects our culture and is determined as a place which belongs to everybody.
  • Public spaces are where community shares, where it interacts and socializes.

We need art to enrich our environment, to teach and engage. Mural programs are important vocational training opportunities for youth, and can lead to careers as painters, graphic designers, or commercial artists.

Visual artist, Aise Born, goes shopping for art supplies with a generous donation from Blick on Beverly in Los Angeles, CA.

After presenting concepts and sketches to the school, it was decided that the mural would represent Business, Science and the Arts. The students helped to prepare the wall and Aise Born went to work to finish the mural over the summer. We love it and the students do too! Our gratitude to the staff and faculty at Crenshaw High School for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this project.
